Is Quoting Good in a College Essay? Quotations are an important part of any essay. When writing college essays, it's important to be sure that your quotes are clear and that they make sense in the context of the entire essay. Sometimes it's hard to determine when a quote is a good choice. For instance, if you're quoting a Black American philosopher, does he have anything in common with your own philosophy? Or, if you're quoting a British essay writer, does he share many common ideas with yours? Fortunately, there are some clear guidelines for choosing good quotes and selecting appropriate ones. First, when writing an essay, be sure to pick your favorite topic. After that, find and select three or four essay topics from which you'll need to write the bulk of your essay. You can choose an essay topic based on one of the following approaches: A. Determine how your essay will achieve its desired result. That means knowing your target audience, as well as what you hope to accomplish through the writing of the essay. In other words, if you're writing to a class, your essay should be a class assignment. However, if you're writing as a student, it should be based on personal experience. B. Choose quotes that are best suited for your essay topic. For instance, if your essay is primarily a review of your own experiences, you might want to use a "student review" of something you've read or experienced recently. On the other hand, if your essay's purpose is primarily to discuss current events, you may want to avoid using political pundits' quotes unless they accurately portray the situation on the ground. As an example, there are several people (including some in the media) who routinely make ridiculous claims about President Obama being a socialist or a communist, or any other outrageous claim that further validates their worldview. Thus, you must choose quotes that accurately represent your topic. C. Avoid using too many quotes. Each quote that you use must be related to the essay topic. Quotes from the written word, news, or general information sources should constitute about 10% of your total text. However, these quotes can appear in footnotes or in the author's resource box. If a writer limits the use of quotes to their main text, they may appear overly academic, which does not reflect positively on the quality of their writing. D. Be careful not to turn your quotes into advertisements. A writer who relies on "slip' quotes" to promote their essay may unwittingly alienate some readers. Thus, when using "slip' quotes" always provide context to those quotes, such as their origin and intended meaning. In addition, when quoting individuals, don't exaggerate or fabricate their personalities. Keep your readers in mind when choosing a quote and you'll be better off. E. Quote with respect. The quote should not be used in an insensitive or servile manner. A paper writer should quote someone's words with admiration, not to degrade or demean them. If you are having difficulty coming up with a good quote, consider using one of the following well-known quotes: A college essay is a valuable source of learning for anyone with a desire to advance his or her career. When properly executed, a quote can make the entire paper much better than it would have otherwise been. However, proper usage and citing sources are crucial to a good outcome.
